You can go way back to post wwII when Freuds ideas were imported into the American Marketing world by his nephew edward berneise  (sp?).  The tobacco giants realised if they could remove the taboo on females smoking they could double there money, he made millions by doing a freudian analysis which led to advertising campaigns where the cigerattes were treated as penises.  He is also the talented man who coined the phrase public relations after the normal term propaganda got a bad wrap from the nazis.
